Gap the capital of the Hautes-Alpes department, is not only the highest prefecture in France but also the largest city in the Southern Alps.

Serre-Ponçon lake, also known as the ‘sea in the mountains’, is one of the highlights of Hautes-Alpes.

From the north to the south of the department, you’ll discover numerous beautiful hiking routes and spots, such as the high peaks of the Écrins National Park.

On the left bank of the lake, between Savines and Sauze-du-Lac, there’s a walking path along the ‘fairy chimneys’, a unique type of pyramid-like rock formation topped with a ‘hat’.

This park is one of the most beautiful areas in the Alps: 650 km² of free land, rich in colour and dotted with many villages.

Located at the border of the Northern and Southern Alps, you’ll find the Écrins National Park, one of the largest and highest mountain ranges in the Alps.
